This apple cinnamon roll bake combines tender spiced apples with golden, pull-apart cinnamon-roll pieces. Pre-cooking the apples helps them finish tender at the same time as the dough.
Use a 9-inch round or square baking pan, bake at 350°F, and expect 35–45 minutes in the oven. The recipe yields 8 servings.
Apple Cinnamon Roll Bake Ingredients
For the apple filling:
- 3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1-inch chunks
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
For the bake:
- 1 tube refrigerated cinnamon-roll dough with icing, containing 8 rolls
- 1/4 cup caramel sauce
- Cooking spray or softened butter for the pan
The apples should be firm, sweet-tart varieties such as Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, or Granny Smith. Cut every piece close to 1 inch so the filling cooks evenly.
Cook 1-Inch Apple Chunks Until Tender
- Coat a 9-inch round or square baking pan with cooking spray or butter. Set it aside and heat the oven to 350°F.
- Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apple chunks, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice.
- Cook for 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples begin to soften but still hold their shape. The pieces should be fork-tender at the edges, not collapsing.
- Whisk the cornstarch and water in a small bowl. Stir the mixture into the skillet and cook for 1–2 minutes, until the juices thicken into a light syrup.
Remove the skillet from the heat and let the filling cool for about 10 minutes. Slightly cooling it prevents the dough from becoming greasy or soft before baking. Do not skip this pre-cook: raw apple chunks release too much moisture and often remain firm after the center dough is done.
Assemble the Cinnamon Roll Apple Bake With 1-Inch Dough Pieces
- Open the cinnamon-roll tube and reserve the icing for later. Separate the rolls, then cut each one into pieces about 1 inch thick.
- Spread half of the cooked apples and their syrup across the prepared pan.
- Arrange half of the dough pieces over the apples, leaving small spaces between them for the dough to expand.
- Spoon the remaining apples over the dough. Add the rest of the cinnamon-roll pieces, distributing them evenly across the surface.
- Drizzle the caramel sauce over the assembled bake. Keep most of the sauce on the dough rather than letting it pool around the edges.
For a homemade version, use about 16 ounces of prepared cinnamon-roll dough. Cut it into the same 1-inch pieces and keep the pieces chilled until assembly.
Cinnamon Roll Apple Pie Bake: Bake, Glaze, and Serve
- Bake at 350°F for 35–45 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through. The top should be puffed and golden brown, and the apple syrup should bubble around the edges.
- Check the center before removing the pan. Pull apart one middle dough piece with a fork. It should look fluffy and fully baked, with no wet, stretchy dough in the center.
- If the top browns before the middle is set, loosely cover the pan with foil and continue baking for 5–10 minutes. Add a few extra minutes if the apples released abundant juice.
- Cool the bake for 10 minutes. Warm the reserved icing briefly if needed, then drizzle it over the top while the bake is still warm.
Serve warm by spooning or pulling apart the dough and apples. Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container for up to 3 days, then reheat individual portions until warm.
